Something about ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

It has been a while since the debut of the new ubuntu Natty. One notable change is the GUI shell. Instead of sticking with GNOME 2 or upgrade to its successor, aka GNOME 3. This time, Natty brings us the unity desktop which is based on the GNOME 2.

I am not a long time linux user, not to mention GUI user. Many people don't like the new interface, saying that the sidebar is cumbersome. Many are trying to request ubuntu to integrate the new GNOME 3 in the next release or just installing the GNOME 3 using the ppa source. I tried that. Now I have 3 interfaces installed, the unity, GNOME 3 and KDE (of course the old GNOME 2). After playing around these for a while. I would say "hey, why not give unity a shot? It is not bad at all!"

As a power user of windows since windows 3.x (around when I was only 8 or 9 years old), I like the windows very much. Actually, I am quite used to rely most of my jobs on clicking mouse while keeping moderate amount of shortcut key use (e.g. Alt + F4, Alt + Tab, etc). Also, I have been using MacOS for 3 years and there are some brilliant interface design such as the dock, the status bar on top of the screen, the expose and the spotlight. The unity interface simply brings the pros of the two systems together and adds some unique features exclusively on Linux platform. I like the side bar(what is it officially called), which also serves as a task bar with expose functionality.

So people, why not give it a shot?
